About Tulare Lake

Tulare Lake is a natural freshwater lake located in the San Joaquin Valley of central California. It was once the largest freshwater lake west of the Great Lakes, covering an extensive area of approximately 690 square miles. However, due to changes in water management and agricultural development, the lake has significantly diminished in size over the years and is currently classified as an intermittent lake.

Although the size of Tulare Lake has greatly reduced, it still retains an average depth of around 9 feet, with deeper sections reaching up to 45 feet. The lake is surrounded by fertile agricultural lands and marshes, making it a haven for a diverse range of aquatic species. Anglers and boaters can expect to find a variety of fish species in Tulare Lake, including largemouth bass, channel catfish, white catfish, bluegill, crappie, and carp. These species provide ample opportunities for boaters and fishing enthusiasts to enjoy recreational activities on the lake, such as fishing, boating, and wildlife watching.
