About Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America, spanning between the province of Ontario in Canada and the state of New York in the United States. With an area of approximately 7,340 square miles (18,960 square kilometers), it is the smallest of the Great Lakes but still ranks as the 14th largest lake globally. The lake has an average depth of 283 feet (86 meters) and reaches its maximum depth at 802 feet (244 meters). Lake Ontario is connected to Lake Erie through the Niagara River and to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence River.

Due to its size and diverse habitat, Lake Ontario supports a wide range of fish species. Anglers and boaters can find plentiful populations of a variety of fish, including lake trout, salmon, bass, walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, yellow perch, and various panfish species. The lake's deep, cold waters provide excellent conditions for cold-water species like lake trout and salmon, making it a popular destination for recreational fishing. Additionally, its rocky shores and abundant vegetation attract a variety of bird species, creating a vibrant ecosystem for wildlife enthusiasts.
